Chapter Six

ON ANY GIVEN day, Brady would be happy to put on his uniform and get back to work after two days off. His time yesterday with Sarah changed that. Now he longed to have another day he could spend in her company.

As he strapped on his utility belt he thought about how brave she’d been after being dumped off the dirt bike. He admired a woman who charged forward and ignored the bumps along a rocky road. In more ways than one.

She’d finally gotten the hang of easing off the clutch instead of popping it, and side by side, they’d taken off for the hills. His ex would never have gotten on the bike the first time, let alone if she’d hit the ground and needed bandages. Sarah didn’t seem to let it bother her. In fact, if the grin she wore while they’d been riding was any indication, she’d enjoyed herself immensely.

When they’d taken a break near the creek, they’d had a chance to talk. She’d asked him about his family and how it had been growing up on the five-­hundred-­acre ranch his parents owned. And when she’d learned he was very close to his parents as well as his older sister and younger brother she gave an audible sigh.

He’d learned that particular exhale came from the disadvantages of falling in the middle of a pack of siblings and becoming invisible to her overzealously religious parents. Personally, he didn’t understand how she could be overlooked. Not that she was loud and boisterous, but because her sweet nature was rare and special.

By no means did that mean he didn’t find her sexy as hell.

She rang the bell so hard on that particular quality he’d had a hard time sleeping after he dropped her off at home. Though he’d managed—­with great effort—­to refrain from kissing her a second time, he’d always been a man with a creative imagination. Last night, it had worked overtime. This morning when he’d woken up in a tangle of sweaty sheets, he recognized the need to back away from the power of the feelings he was developing.

Quickly.

Sarah wasn’t a woman a man should take lightly. She wasn’t the type of woman you could have an affair with and then just walk away. She was the kind of woman a man wanted to wake up next to every day. The kind he wanted to make his wife and the mother of his children. The kind whose face he wanted to see as he took his last breath.

Sarah Randall was a forever kind of woman.

He, unfortunately, was not a forever kind of man.

He holstered his Smith and Wesson and walked out onto his porch to grab the newspaper before he headed to the station.

Something crunched beneath his foot.

He looked down.

There beneath the heavy tread of his black tactical boots lay a heart-­dotted cellophane wrapper containing a smashed sprinkle-­topped fortune cookie.

Damn.

He reached down and swiped it up off the doormat.
